A bedroom lit without a ceiling light

Inge and Marcus took out the ceiling bulb and use two table lamps and a wall light instead.

Inge and Marcus live in a 52 square metre flat in Copenhagen. Their bedroom is 3.2 by 3.8 metres, and the ceiling light, a single bright bulb, was on for about ten minutes a day. Last winter they took the bulb out and have left it out.

They now use three lights. A Nook table lamp in sand stands on each Tuck bedside table, and an Arc wall light hangs on the wall above the bed, 140 cm from the floor. Each light has its own switch, so they can light only the side where one of them is reading.

In the evening they switch on the two Nook lamps. Each uses a 5 W LED bulb in 2700 K warm white, which gives about 450 lumens. That is enough to read by without lighting the whole room.

The Arc wall light is for getting dressed. It sends light up and down the wall and fills the room with a soft glow. They keep it on a dimmer so it can go low at night.

Marcus advises starting with the table lamps. Two Nook lamps cost €520, and they need only a socket. The Arc wall light is wired into the wall, so a qualified electrician must fit it. Inge's was done in under an hour.

A few rules help in any bedroom. Keep the bulb out of sight when you lie down, which a shade does for you. Choose bulbs of 2700 K. Place each lamp so the light falls on your page and the bulb stays out of your eyes.
